Samsung Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Working: Complete Tech's Guide
Samsung ice maker problems are one of the most common service calls in the appliance repair industry. This guide covers the diagnostic process from start to finish, organized by symptom.
Before You Start: Common Across All Models
Before diving into model-specific diagnostics, check these universal causes:
- Water supply — Verify the water valve is open and the supply line isn't kinked
- Freezer temperature — Must be 0°F (-18°C) or below for ice production
- Water filter — A clogged filter reduces water flow below the minimum threshold
- Child lock — Some models disable the ice maker when child lock is engaged
Symptom 1: No Ice Production at All
Check the Ice Maker Assembly
On most Samsung French Door models (RF28, RF263, RF267 series):
Samsung ice makers have a built-in test mode. Press and hold the TEST button on the ice maker for 10 seconds. You should hear the motor engage and water fill. If nothing happens, the ice maker assembly itself has failed.
Most likely causes (in order of probability):
- Failed ice maker assembly — especially on RF28HMEDB models (known issue)
- Frozen water fill tube — ice buildup blocks water from reaching the ice maker
- Defective water inlet valve — not opening when ice maker calls for water
- Failed ice maker sensor/thermistor
Symptom 2: Ice Maker Freezing Over
This is the most common Samsung ice maker complaint. The ice bucket, fill tube, or both freeze solid.
The Root Cause
Samsung's design allows moist air to enter the ice compartment through a gap between the ice room and the main freezer compartment. This moisture condenses and freezes over time.
The Fix
Samsung released a kit (DA82-02367A) that includes:
- New ice room door gasket
- Foam insulation strips
- Updated drain clip
Installation takes approximately 30-45 minutes for an experienced tech.
Will Samsung's ice maker kit permanently fix the freezing issue?▾
In most cases, yes. The kit addresses the primary moisture intrusion path. However, about 15-20% of units may still experience the issue if the evaporator cover seal has also degraded. In those cases, you'll also need to reseal the evaporator cover.
Can I use a heat gun to thaw the ice maker instead of replacing parts?▾
You can thaw it as a temporary fix, but the ice will return within 2-4 weeks. The underlying design flaw needs to be addressed with the kit for a permanent solution. Charging the customer for a thaw-only visit without explaining this is not recommended.
Symptom 3: Small or Hollow Ice Cubes
Small or hollow cubes indicate insufficient water flow:
- Replace the water filter
- Check the water pressure (minimum 20 psi required)
- Inspect the water inlet valve — it may be partially stuck
- Check the fill tube for partial ice obstruction
Model-Specific Notes
RF28 Series (French Door)
The most problematic Samsung ice maker line. The DA97-15217D ice maker assembly has had multiple revisions. Always install the latest revision.
Bespoke Series
Uses a different ice maker design with improved moisture management. Fewer freezing issues, but the water inlet valve is more prone to failure.
Side-by-Side Models (RS25, RS27)
These use a simpler auger-style ice maker. Most issues are water supply related rather than the ice maker mechanism itself.
